Tranquil Walks Near Stromness

Walks near Stromness: Brinkies Brae, Warbeth Beach and Black Craig

Stromness serves as an ideal base for gentle walks that reveal the natural beauty of this corner of Orkney. Just beyond the town limits, you’ll find yourself amongst stunning coastal scenery and peaceful countryside.

One of the most accessible walks begins at the north end of town and climbs gradually up Brinkies Brae. This modest hill overlooks Stromness and rewards walkers with panoramic views across the town, Scapa Flow, and on clear days, all the way to the hills of Hoy. The path is well-trodden but can be a bit steep in places—the effort, however, is more than worthwhile. As you ascend, you’ll notice how the town seems to tumble down to the sea, its grey stone buildings clustered protectively around the harbour. Many locals come here in the evening to watch the sunset spread its colours across the western sky.

For those seeking a longer ramble, continuing beyond Brinkies Brae takes you towards Warbeth Beach, a beautiful stretch of sand and pebbles facing the Atlantic. The coastal path offers stunning views across to the island of Hoy, whose dramatic hills form a striking contrast to the relatively flat landscape of western Mainland. Along the way, you might spot seals bobbing in the water or, if you’re particularly fortunate, the occasional pod of orcas that sometimes visit these waters.

Warbeth Beach itself is a tranquil spot perfect for contemplation. The cemetery overlooking the beach adds a poignant note, with weathered gravestones bearing witness to Stromness’s maritime past—many memorialise sailors and those lost at sea. The beach is especially magical in the evening light when the setting sun casts long shadows and turns the water to gold.

Another splendid walk leads south from Stromness towards Black Craig. This dramatic headland offers magnificent views across Hoy Sound and often provides opportunities to watch vessels navigating through this important maritime passage. The path can be a bit rough in places, but the coastal scenery is simply spectacular. Black Craig itself rises impressively from the shoreline, its dark cliffs contrasting with the often white-capped waves below. Seabirds wheel overhead, their cries mingling with the sound of the sea.
