Walking and Hiking

Orkney offers walking opportunities to suit all abilities, from gentle coastal strolls to more challenging hikes. The West Mainland of Orkney features particularly varied terrain, with cliff-top paths providing spectacular ocean views. For dedicated walkers, the multi-day Orkney Footprint Route offers a comprehensive exploration of the mainland’s most scenic areas.

Birdwatching

The islands are a paradise for birdwatchers, with diverse habitats supporting numerous species. Nearby Marwick Head RSPB reserve hosts impressive seabird colonies, including fulmars, kittiwakes, guillemots and puffins (in season). The wetlands around Stromness attract various waders and waterfowl, while the moorlands harbour birds of prey including hen harriers and short-eared owls.

Fishing

With its pristine waters, Orkney offers excellent fishing opportunities. Try your hand at sea angling from the shore or local charter boats, or enjoy freshwater fishing for brown trout in Orkney’s numerous lochs (proper permits required).

Wildlife Watching

Beyond birds, Orkney’s waters are home to diverse marine life. Seal watching is particularly rewarding, with both common and grey seals abundant around the shores. Lucky visitors might also spot otters along quieter stretches of coastline, while dolphin and whale sightings are possible, particularly during summer months. The best way to increase your chances of marine wildlife encounters is to join one of the wildlife boat tours operating from Stromness.
